Telephone Line

A telephone line consists of strands of copper wires which are used for telephony. A subscriber is connected to another subscriber and to the telephone company by a telephone line. In general, a telephone line is an arrangement of wires, pipes, or optical fibers through which voice and data transfer occurs. A telephone line is also known as a landline or a fixed line. Each telephone line has a designated telephone number. The telephone number serves as an address which allows calls to be routed accurately. At the same time, a telephone number identifies and represents the subscriber for billing purposes.

A telephone line comes in several kinds based on the type of unit and telephone plan chosen by the subscriber. Some telephone line types are dedicated lines and fixed phone lines. A dedicated telephone line is similar with that of a private branch exchange system. This kind of telephone line allows a single trunk number to connect more than one line. A fixed phone is a wireless phone fixed within a specific location. A telephone line may also be post-paid or pre-paid. On a post-paid telephone line, the plans may be further categorized as local, regional, national, and shared.

How does a telephone line work?

A telephone line connects a user to the exchange system of the telephone network. Phone wirings of individual telephone subscribers in the same building are converged at a central junction. A local loop, which consists of wires going to the exchange system, connects the exchange system and the central junction. In contrast, mobile phones conduct voice and data transmission using radio waves through a cellular network. A telephone line has higher audio quality than that of a mobile line. A regular telephone line also has greater stability and security. The reason for this is that a telephone line is not subject to the availability of a cellular network coverage.

Why do you need a telephone line?

Voice communication between subscribers on separate locations is made possible with a telephone line. With the use of a telephone line, you are able to use the telephone to make and receive calls, as well as access your voice mail. A telephone line also allows you to browse through the Internet or send and receive e-mails. Without a telephone line, a telephone set will not be useful. As there are more telephone companies and competing services, acquiring a telephone line is easy and inexpensive. Finally, because of several post-paid and pre-paid options, you are free to choose which plan is most suitable to your budget and requirements.
